Language Paralanguage is an art project, which explores the sound-world of the 44 official European languages; it revolves around the wealth of languages existing in such close geographical proximity in Europe. “Language”, examines the phonetic and written characteristics of language through a series of interviews with European nationals who live in Europe and do not speak in their mother tongue. It displays children’s poems spoken in different European languages and signatures of the participants. “Paralanguage” explores language as sound rather than meaning, using recorded material from the interviews. A number of artists have been invited to respond to different languages creating new soundwork.
